POLS 30 — GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS OF EAST ASIA
This course provides an introduction to the government and politics of the countries of East Asia. Starting with the impact of Japanese imperialism in the region, the course examines the political and economic developments of China, Japan, South Korea, North Korea, and Taiwan in the 20th and 21st centuries. Topics covered in the course include autocratic governments in China and North Korea, democratization in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, economic development and the role of government in guiding the economy, and governmental structures. In addition, current domestic and international issues of each country will be explored.
