PSY342 — Forensic Psychology
Prerequisites: PSY 101 or consent of instructor; Demonstrate reason in criminal law and the difference between psychological syndromes and psychological profiles; identify the effects of unsupported scientific concepts in the US legal system; define the biological and ethological explanations of aggression and understand why antisocial and narcissistic personalities are prone to aggression; explain the various motive-based typologies of serial killers; describe the connection between terrorism and mental illness; produce reasoned arguments regarding cultural competence and multiculturalism in law enforcement; communicate the basics of the cognitive interview, its strengths and its weaknesses; explain the factors that make a person vulnerable to forced confessions and be define false memories and confabulation; identify the essential features of a psychological competency evaluation; describe how voir dire is used to determine juror bias and how juror personality attributes can affect jury verdicts; understand treatment techniques for child abuse, child sexual abuse offenders, domestic violence, PTSD, and terrorism-induced psychological disturbances.
