DEA710 — RDA Expanded Functions
3 credits This course provides theoretical concepts and skills to expand the dental assistant’s or dental hygienist’s scope of practice to include occlusal registration; gingival retraction placement and removal; fabrication, temporary cementation, temporary recementation,and removal of provisional restoration; final impression; application of cavity liners and bases, and desensitizing agents, applying bonding systems; placement, bonding, and removal of orthodontic brackets and bands or provisional orthodonic appliances; removal of adhesives using non motorized hand instruments; placement of temporary restorative materials following preparation by dentist; extraoral adjustment to acrylic dentures without making adjustment to prosethetic teeth; and tissue conditioning. Instructor consent is required. To be eligible to register for this course, students must: Be a graduate of an ADA-accredited dental assistant program; or Currently certified by the Dental Assisting National Board; or have at least three months of clinical practice as a registered dental assistant;or have at least three months of clinical practice as a dental assistant in a state that does not require legistration; or hold and active dental hygiene license in Iowa AND be employed by a licensed dentist and whose policies allow the dental assistant and/or dental hygienist to perform procedures related to the expanded scope of practice.
