NURS-4333 — Community
Course Description This combined theory and clinical course will explore the role of the community/public health nurse caring for individuals, families, communities, and populations through designing, implementing, and evaluating population-based interventions that promote the health of a community and its members. Emphasis is given to health promotion and disease/injury prevention within vulnerable and at-risk populations and minimizing health consequences of emergency and disaster situations. Entry-level competencies for public health nurses are developed through diverse clinical experiences in virtual and real-world settings. Course Objectives 1. Explore how social and health determinants, genetics, culture, ethnicity, spirituality, health beliefs, health literacy, and global perspectives influence the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations. 2. Examine data from reliable sources of evidence in the context of population-based care. Apply principles of epidemiology to the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations. 3. Investigate the influence of environment on the current and future health of individuals, families, communities, and populations. 4. Explore the nurse's role as an advocate for vulnerable and at-risk individuals, families, communities, and populations. 5. Discuss how health care policy, public policy, ethical principles, fiscal responsibility, available resources, and social justice influence population-based care. 6. Apply the principles of effective communication, teaching/learning, and behavioral change in caring for individuals, families, communities, and populations. 7. Analyze the scope of practice, roles, and responsibilities of the professional nurse in caring for individuals, families, communities, and populations in various community and public health settings.) 8. Analyze primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention strategies that target at-risk populations at the individual, family, community, and systems levels. 9. Collaborate within an interdisciplinary team in various community and public health settings including emergency preparedness and disaster management. 10. Investigate the use and influence of technology and information management in the context of population-based care. Clinical Objectives (CO) 1. C1. Research local, state, and federal databases to conduct a community health assessment and proposal for addressing needs. 2. C2. Integrate concepts of health disparities, health literacy, and cultural belief systems in the community assessment. 3. C3. Develop an evidence-based health education program/class based on data from the community assessment. 4. C4. Apply relevant local, state, and national regulations and policies that affect addressing the health needs of the community assessed.
