Topics covered are: tools of chemistry; atoms, molecules and ions; chemical reactions I: chemical equations and reactions in aqueous solutions; chemical reactions II: chemical calculation/stoichiometry; the gaseous state; thermochemistry; quantum theory and the electronic structure of atoms; periodic relationships among the elements; chemical bonding I: basic concepts; chemical bonding II: molecular geometry. Molecular orbitals will be covered time permitting. A letter grade of C or better is required to take CHEM 1120. Pre/ F. (T) 3 hours lecture
