ENG 230 — Environmental Lit

This course aims to explore the ways in which ideas about the physical or “natural” environment have been shaped in American literature. The course will survey a variety of important texts and writers in this tradition and introduce students to different eras and genres of environmental literature and nature writing. Topics include Native American and Euro-American cultural perspectives, early environmental thinkers, progressive and radical writers, representations of nature, environmental ethics, environmental history, and the impact of gender and race on environmental discourse. Offered in alternating winter terms (2024, 2026, 2028).
