ART 204 — History of Western Art I

Historical survey of the visual arts covering selected works of painting, sculpture, architecture, and other arts studied in relation to the cultures producing them. This course explores the global history of art and architecture from the origins of art in the Paleolithic Era through about 500 CE and includes study of ancient China, South West Asia and Northern Africa, Europe, and South America. Emphasis is placed on the role of art within emerging cultures and civilizations, the relationship of art to social, political and philosophical contexts, and connections of past art and culture to the present
