This course examines the laws and policies governing the use of natural resources. Natural resources include forests, water, and wildlife, as well as hard rock minerals, coal, oil, and natural gas. We will discuss who owns these resources, how they are used or managed, and how their use is regulated. The course will also consider the laws governing management of public lands, such as national parks, monuments, and wilderness areas. Throughout the course, we will examine the values at stake in natural resource use and protection, the conflicts between public and private use, and the challenges inherent in natural resource management.
