FIRE 118 — Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations

Prerequisite(s): READ 02 or Reading placement of ENGL 111. This course provides a comprehensive overview of hazardous awareness and operational protocols essential for ensuring safety in various environments. Students will explore the identification, assessment, and management of hazardous materials and situations, including chemical, biological, radiological, and physical hazards. Through a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical exercises, students will learn to recognize potential hazards, evaluate risk factors, and implement effective response strategies. Emphasizing the importance of safety regulations and best practices, the course covers topics such as personal protective equipment (PPE), hazard communication, emergency response planning, and environmental health concerns. By the end of the course, students will develop the skills necessary to operate safely and efficiently in hazardous environments, enhancing their preparedness for real-world scenarios and be eligible to take the Missouri Division of Fire Safety certification exam.
