HORT14 — Market Gardening

Units: 3 Hours: 36 hours LEC; 54 hours LAB Grade Options: Letter Grade Term Typically Every fall term This course is an introduction to small-scale production and local distribution of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and cut flowers in and around cities. Emphasis will be placed on environmentally sustainable and intensive crop production on urban farms and edible landscapes, including home gardens, school gardens, community gardens, senior centers, and micro-farms. Topics include crop selection; water, soil, and nutrient management; soil-less growing and controlled environment agriculture; seed saving; pest and disease management; safe harvesting and handling; and product marketing. Students will be growing seasonal crops at the campus market farm. (CSU)
