ENGL49A — Introduction to Creative Writing

Units: 3 Hours: 54 hours LEC Grade Options: Letter Grade General Education: Delta Area 3 Term Typically Every term Advisories: ENGL C1000 or ENGL C1000E with a grade of “C” or better. This course is to the student interested in exploring creative writing in any genre, including fiction and non-fiction: short stories, novels, poetry, songs, plays, musicals, screenplays, television scripts, children’s books, autobiographies and memoirs, biographies, magazine and newspaper articles, features, reviews, and columns. Emphasis is placed on the conception and development of ideas, process of creative writing, elements and formats of specific genres of writing, benefits of practice in several genres, artistry employed by successful, established, and published authors, and constructive group criticism of work submitted for the course. Students will read actively in several genres to them be in conversation with the work of other writers. (UC, CSU, C-ID ENGL 200)
