HUMA 1775 - Monsters of Modernity HUMA 1775 - Monsters of Modernity 3 Credits What can vampires, zombies, and other strange beasts tell us about the cultures that create them and about ourselves? This course uses monsters as a framework to examine cultural values, fears, and social tensions from the early nineteenth century to the present, focusing on technological, scientific, environmental, economic, and social change. Drawing on examples from Europe, America, and East Asia, we will explore how monsters depicted in art, literature, film, and other media challenge and reinforce ideas about what it means to be human. 3C/3/0/0 Prerequisite(s): READ 0722 or READ 0724 or EAPP 0900 with a grade of “C” or better, or appropriate assessment score Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC) Goal Area(s): Goal 6
