OAL 224 - San Juan Island Kayaking and Hiking OAL 224 - San Juan Island Kayaking and Hiking 3 Credit(s) Students must be able to minimally perform the requisite physical activities defined by the course outline and participate on a regular, daily basis for the entire length of the class period to pass the class successfully. If additional accommodations are necessary, please meet with your instructor during the first week of class to discuss this possibility or to discuss a more appropriate class placement. Attendance at both pre-trip orientations is required for student to be able to attend and complete the class. Course Description: Teaches the necessary skills involved in sea kayak and hiking in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. Students will enjoy the natural beauty of the inland coastal islands through camping, kayaking and hiking the islands for nine days. The required skills include pre-trip planning, orienteering, traveling as a group, camp site selection, wilderness ethics, and safety. Students are expected to learn and share in all aspects of group kayak and hiking including sharing the responsibility of dividing and carrying group gear, setting up camp, cooking, and cleaning up. Challenges will be met as a group and involvement is critical to a safe and successful multi-faceted excursion. Additional fees will be required for services, campground, etc. Course Learning
