SURG 120 - Skills Lab Practicum I SURG 120 - Skills Lab Practicum I 6 Total Credits This course is designed to facilitate student learning and proficiency in the accurate application of surgical principles and practices. The laboratory component of the course focuses on enabling students to attain a satisfactory level of performance in safety protocols, including CPR, PPE, and aseptic techniques, providing them with the necessary skills to enter the clinical setting. Students will acquire knowledge of the proper sequence for surgical scrubbing, gowning and gloving procedures, as well as the establishment and maintenance of a sterile field. Additionally, the student will learn about draping materials, needles, sutures, basic instrumentation, surgeon preference cards and patient transportation. A key component of the course is the development of proficiency in the first scrub role. To assess their competence, students will be required to successfully complete a final exam, demonstrating their ability to set up for a laparotomy in both the scrub and circulator roles. Discuss sources of contamination. Demonstrate sterile techniques. Employ sterile techniques when gowning and gloving self and when assisting other team members. Create sterile field and open sterile packages onto sterile field. Wrap sterile packages using envelope wrap and peel pouches with appropriate sealing methods. Demonstrate the steps of a hand wash. Identify the preliminary preparations for the surgical scrub
