This is an introductory course providing an overview of various exceptionalities and the unique needs of students ages birth to twenty-one with physical, cognitive, communication, or social/emotional disabilities. The course will review historical influences on special education; the laws and procedures which govern accessibility, identification and placement; the various teaching and learning challenges; various perspectives regarding disabilities; national and local resources; and recommended modifications and accommodations to meet various exceptionalities. Examples of exceptionalities include: learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, developmental delays, intellectually gifted, speech and language disorders, other health impairment, autism spectrum disorder, visual and hearing loss or impairments, traumatic brain injury, multiple disabilities, and emotional disabilities.
