NDT209 — Phased Array (PAUT) I and II
3 , 3 lecture periods 0 lab periods Provides students with a basic knowledge of phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) consistent with other methods, and to acknowledge PAUT as unique enough to warrant an additional body of knowledge and qualification requirement. Demonstrate proficient knowledge of the application of phased array. Demonstrate proficient knowledge of how to set up and calibrate NDT equipment. Demonstrate proficient knowledge and basic understanding of ultrasonic theory. Outline: Introduction Terminology of PAUT History of PAUT- medical ultrasound, etc. Responsibilities of levels of certification Basic Principles of PAUT Review of ultrasonic wave theory - longitudinal and shear-wave Introduction to PAUT concepts and theory Phasing Beam scanning patterns Delay laws and focal laws Imaging Dynamic depth focusing Equipment Computer based systems Focal law generator Probes Wedges Scanners Testing Techniques Linear scans Sectorial scans Electronic scans Standardization Active element and probe checks Wedge delay Velocity Exit point verification Refraction angle verification Sensitivity DAC, TCG, TVG, and ACG variables and parameters Effects of curvature Focusing effects Beam steering Acquisition gates Data Collection Single probes Multiple probes Multiple groups or multiplexing single/multiple probes Non-encoded scans Encoded scans Zone discrimination Scan plans Probe offset and indexing Procedures Specific applications Material evaluations Composites Nonmetallic ma
