ENGL147 — Introduction to African American Literature
(H/DSJ) What is the Black literary tradition, and how does it represent the African/Black American experience? This course surveys African American literature with particular attention to hisotrical and contemporary social contexts. Emphasis is placed on literature and perspectives from a wide spectrum of African American and Black authors, leaders, artists, and activists. Texts may include fiction, poetry, nonfiction, music from hymns to hip hop, cultural artifacts from quilts to fashion, food culture, and other forms of storytelling. 5 hours Lecture
