FREN 1003 - Elementary French I FREN 1003 - Elementary French I Description Introductory course designed for students beginning the college-level study of French. Presentations of vocabulary, grammatical structures, and Francophone culture enable the student to understand, speak, read, and write basic French. Speaking Pronounce the alphabet correctly. Produce isolated words and high-frequency phrases, as well as express basic courtesies and the simplest of questions. Practice simple dialogue with fellow students, employing active vocabulary and grammatical structures. Reading Identify isolated words and common phrases including cognates and borrowed words. Read and discuss simple materials such as invitations, calendars, and short cultural dialogues and articles. Writing Identify all the symbols in the alphabetic system, including correct use of diacritical marks. Write isolated words, common phrases, very simple questions, numbers, and dates. Produce basic sentences and several short paragraphs. Culture Identify major Francophone countries. Discuss certain aspects of French culture, such as greetings, major holidays, typical school day, and the family. General Education
