HIST 1200 — History of United States Through 1877

This course explores the formative events and ideas that shaped the United States from the colonial era through Reconstruction. We examine the ideological origins of the American Revolution, the challenges facing the new republic (both domestically and internationally), the contradictions between the ideals of liberty and the institution of slavery, and the violent rejection of Reconstruction after the Civil War. We engage with primary sources and diverse historical interpretations to develop our own perspectives on the past.
