ART 246 — ART246 Zines and Artist Books

This course introduces students to the art forms of zines and artist books. Zines are small, self-published book works that explore ideas through flexible formats and focus on personal expression. Creating art in the form of the book requires a heightened consideration of the written word, image relationships, sculptural forms and relationship to the reader. Students will learn the definitions of zines and artist books, the intersections of the two and their histories. Digital methods and experimental materials and content creation are introduced for students to explore. Students will learn how to apply the elements and principles of design while using traditional and experimental book construction and binding techniques.
