NRSG2300 — Care of Women and Children
This didactic course provides theory and application of nursing skills in the care of the new family including maternity patients, newborns, and pediatrics patients. This course will also discuss the role of the family in the care of the pediatric patient. Ethical-legal nursing and safety concerns are also discussed in both sections, as is medical terminology within the context of the course material throughout the semester. In Maternal Newborn (MNB), students are introduced to perinatal nursing, the care of women and newborns throughout the childbearing experience, including pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum timeframes. Students will learn about safe and effective care, health promotion and maintenance, psychosocial integrity, physiological integrity, and care of the maternal-newborn patient within the scope of the LPN as related to maternal-newborn health care. In Pediatrics (PEDS), students are introduced to basic assessment of the pediatric patient, health promotion and maintenance such as nutrition, immunizations and routine check- ups, general growth and development and the nursing care process to manage care for patients with uncomplicated medical/surgical conditions in acute, chronic and outpatient healthcare settings within the scope of the LPN. Developmental concepts as well as the special needs of the pediatric population are stressed. Students will examine current and relevant standards of care and apply them to the patient while maintaining patient centered care.
