DNCE 234 — : Pacific Island Dance III

This course studies the dance and music of the Pacific Islands, including Polynesia, Melanesia, and Micronesia at the intermediate-advanced level. Specific countries may include but are not limited to Samoa, Hawai'i, Guam, New Zealand, Tahiti, Tonga, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Naru, and Palau. Students learn intermediate-advanced dance steps, postures, rhythms, timing, songs, and movements of different Pacific Island dances in contemporary and traditional forms using Pacific Island movement terminology. The course examines the function and aesthetic of dance as ritual, social discourse, education, and artistic expression.
