Begins Fall 2025
This course provides an overview of African American racial and cultural formation through literature, using the lens of ethnic studies theories such as resistance, self-affirmation, and agency. Students will explore, describe, and analyze a diverse range of literary texts from various genres and historical periods in order to understand how the struggle for civil rights has impacted Black communities through the history of the United States. The African American experience as expressed through literature will be contrasted with at least one other group such as Native American, Asian American, and Latinx/Chicano, with a particular focus on how the groups express resistance, social justice, and liberation on contemporary issues.
