SOC 205 — Race In America

This course is a comprehensive study of race and ethnicity; It provides an exploration of their significance to cultural, social, economic, and political life in the United States. To begin, students learn the historical development of racial and ethnic categories, and the distinctions between individual prejudices and various forms of institutional discrimination. Students examine the experiences of race and ethnicity within various segments of social life, including assimilation, identity formation, immigration, residential segregation, wealth inequality, educational attainment, labor market participation, and crime. Student can expect to complete this course having a substantive understanding of the interplay between race, law, politics, the economy, and culture in the United States. Prerequisites: SOC 101 or 102 or 201
