SOC222 — Social Problems
This course introduces students to sociological perspectives on contemporary social problems. First, students examine how and why society defines certain harmful social conditions and norm violations as social problems. Next, students analyze a broad range of social problems related to the major dimensions of social inequality, social institutions, well-being, and security. Students distinguish between the major research techniques sociologists use to examine social problems empirically and interpret the results through various theoretical frameworks. Finally, students explore the possibility of bringing about social change by evaluating public policies and social movements across the political spectrum.
