PRNRS112 — Practical Nursing III
4.0 HR. (OC) Prerequisite: PRNRS 110 and BIOL 140, both with a grade of C or better. This course is designed to further develop concepts unique to maternal-child nursing, while utilizing a holistic approach to care and nursing process to assess and manage the health and illness needs of the childbearing and childrearing family. The course will focus on various phases of childbearing, including antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum, as well as complications of the individual and neonate. The childrearing component of the course will focus on growth and development from newborn to adolescence, health promotion and prevention, community resources, communicable diseases, immunizations, cognitive impairment, and common pediatric health alterations. Emphasis is placed on nursing concepts including family-centered care, professionalism, interdisciplinary communication and collaboration, evidence-based practice, clinical judgment, and legal and ethical standards. Incorporating concepts identified in this course, students will apply knowledge and develop skills, and refine professional attitude, in the clinical setting, and be able to provide safe nursing care to selected obstetric and pediatric patients. Three lecture and three laboratory hours per week.
