3.0 HR. (TC) Prerequisite: PHYS 211 with a grade of C or better and MATH 224 with a grade of C or better or concurrent enrollment in MATH 224. This course is a fundamental study of static equilibrium and its applications. Topics include algebraic and vector solutions of equilibrium of 2- and 3- dimensional force systems; analysis of forces acting on members of trusses, frames, machines and beams; distributed forces; forces due to friction and fluids; calculation of centroids and moments of inertia using both integration and the method of composites; the principle of virtual work.
