HST 180 — Regional History (Western Hem.)
This is an 8-week course that focuses on ONE of the following regions in the Western Hemisphere: Mesoamerica (including all of Mexico), Central America, South America, the Caribbean, or the Pacific Islands (the region will change from semester-to-semester). The course aims to analyze the historical development of a region beginning in a key time period of political foundation and then highlighting turning points in the central themes of social, economic, political, and cultural change. Examples of events related to these themes include conflicts, involvement in trade exchange, impact of industrialization, and imperialism. Study of these themes will culminate in defining key characteristics of the modern region as it exists today.
