PHIL 170 — F Logic and Critical Thinking 3 Units
54 hours lecture per term. This course focuses on an understanding of the relationship of language to logic, which should lead to the ability to identify and evaluate various inductive and deductive arguments. The course is also concerned that students become aware of semantic confusions and of the nature and importance of definitions. The minimal competence expected of the student is the ability to distinguish fact from judgment, belief from knowledge and skills in inductive and deductive processes, including an understanding of the formal and informal fallacies. The evaluation of an extended argument may be required by the instructor and designed to satisfy the critical thinking requirement for those planning to transfer to the CSU system.
