ETHS 162 — F Introduction to Federal Indian Law and Policy 3 Units

54 hours lecture per term. This course in American Indian and Indigenous Studies is an introductory survey to the history and contemporary interpretations of U.S. federal Indian law and policy. Students will investigate the meaning of tribal sovereignty, the role of American Indian peoples in federal and state political systems and institutions, and the relationship between tribes and states, with a special emphasis on California. The course also explores tribal government political structures and functions as well as grassroots organizations and social movements that have made policy interventions to advance American Indian political autonomy and self determination.
