54 hours lecture per term. This course is a survey of the African-American experience in the United States from its African roots to 1865, emphasizing the roles of African Americans in the political, social, and economic development of American society. Topics covered include: the trans-Atlantic slave trade, the process of enslavement in the Americas, slave life on the plantation, slave resistance, the socio-economic conditions of free Blacks in the United States, the politico-economic dispute regarding slavery and its consequences in the outbreak of the American Civil War, and the emancipation of the enslaved Black population.
