CJK0016 — Communication

24 credits · 24 hours

In this course students will learn several communication skills that will make them safer and more effective in their work as a law enforcement officer. Officers who possess strong interpersonal skills can respond appropriately and potentially avoid triggering or escalating a crisis situation. On the job, law enforcement officers interact with people of many backgrounds, cultures, religious beliefs, and ethnicities. This course will prepare students to be able to adapt their communication style to fit the needs of the people they are interacting with and to fit the situation at hand. Miscommunication may create problems and potential safety issues. Miscommunication happens for different reasons: unclear expression, communication barriers, or a failure to understand the other person's needs. Having good communication skills will help officers avoid misunderstandings and escalation of tense situations.
