Participants in this course explore the history and functions of political parties and interest groups. They learn how parties select candidates for office and the nature of primary and general elections in the United States. The origins, functions, politics, and future of the Electoral College is discussed in detail, including the pros and cons of retaining it and how it could be reformed. Finally, the evolution of American media as a watchdog, its influence on political discourse, and conversations as to what constitutes a free media are investigated.
