This course focuses on the Chicanx and their relation to U.S. society. It will address some critical areas of the Chicanx experience in terms of identity, economics, labor, immigration, stereotypes, religion, and police-Chicanx conflict. In order to provide a real-world analysis of the contemporary role of the Chicanx in society, this course will include a Service-Learning component with a focus on the Chicanx community of San Jose. A central objective of the course is to base both skill development and content on issues that are of personal and academic interest to the student. The ultimate objective is to use this analysis to come up with strategies for addressing the needs of the Chicanx and other communities with similar circumstances.
