ENGL 082A — African-American Literature 3 Units
This course surveys the literary, social, and cultural nuances of African American novels, drama, short stories, essays and poetry, with an emphasis on the last century to the present and its connection to the many histories, writings and voices that shape and reflect the African American experience. The perspective of the self identity and societal identity of African Americans in relation to dominant Western culture, the issues of racism and sexism, the themes of identity, representation and social power will be critically explored through the vehicle of literary works.
