Traces the development of the world from prehistory to roughly 1700; emphasis will be placed on the ideas, institutions and cultural heritage of civilization, as well as political events. Key themes are the political, philosophical and cultural lega cies of ancient Greece and Rome; the origins and beliefs of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam; Medieval society and institutions; the Renaissance and Reformation; European exploration and colonization; the Scientific Revolution; and the Enlightenment. Through presentations, readings, simulations, and discussions, students will identify major historical trends and themes in world hist ory related to the growing interdependence between world regions. This course addresses the social, economic, political and environmental facets of this increasingly inter-connected world. (3 lec)
