ELS 0551 — Academic ESL Writing I 4 Credit Hours
Beginning-level academic/professional writing skills for students whose first or primary language is not English. Emphasizes writing well-formed, grammatical sentences and studying paragraph development. Focuses on recognizing spelling patterns for verbs and nouns, expanding vocabulary, generating original sentences in the six basic sentence patterns with correct punctuation, distinguishing topic sentences from supporting ideas and concluding sentences, and learning pre-writing techniques for paragraph development. Intended for students who hold a high school certificate or its equivalent and have previously studied English in the United States or their native countries. This course may be taken four times for credit; course does not count toward GPA/graduation and is non-transferable. (4 lecture hours)
