CHM 914 — CHEMI 2552 (CHM 914) Organic Chemistry II 5 Credit Hours
This is the second semester of a one-year course in Organic Chemistry for science and engineering majors. Topics include nomenclature, properties, reactions and synthesis of aromatic compounds, organometallics, alcohols, thiols, phenols, ethers epoxides, aldehydes, ketones, conjugated dienes, enolates, enols, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, and amines. Mechanisms include electrophilic and nucleophilic aromatic substitution, nucleophilic addition, Diels Alder, and nucleophilic acyl substitution. Laboratory emphasizes syntheses with analysis using any or all of the following: mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet spectroscopy, proton and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. (4 lecture hours, 3 lab hours)
