GIS3312 — Foundations of GIS & App
This course introduces the hardware and software components of a Geographic Information System and reviews GIS applications; provides experience in operational and management issues in designing and implementing GIS/GPSs for use in planning, management, analysis, and locational decision making. Topics include data structures and basic functions, methods of data capture and sources of data, and the nature and characteristics of spatial data and objects; applications in municipal, industrial, and service sectors and the associated planning, legal, national, and global issues with a project emphasizing the student's specialization. Upon completion, students should be able to identify GIS hardware components, typical operations, products/applications, and differences between database models and between raster and vector systems; and design and apply GIS/GPS technologies to solve practical problems.
