CST3110W1 — Intro to Woodworking
This introductory course teaches foundational tool operation, material selection, and shop safety procedures essential for hobbies, DIY projects, and building construction trades. Designed for beginners with little to no prior experience, participants will develop hands-on competency utilizing non-power hand tools, handheld power tools, and large machinery including table saws, band saws, and planers. Learners will explore basic wood characteristics, lumber sizing, measuring layout, and traditional joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon or rabbet joints. Heavy emphasis is placed on navigating a multi-person workshop safely, maintaining work piece support, and managing line-of-fire safety zones. By the conclusion of the course, participants will demonstrate tool selection proficiency by executing an individual project from design to completion. Safety compliance is strictly enforced; proper workshop attire, closed-toe shoes, and personal protective equipment (PPE)-including eye, hearing, and dust protection-are required. ***** Required Material & Supplies: Students are responsible for providing their own raw wood materials and supplies for individual project execution, (as specified by the instructor based on their chosen project). For class safety, students must wear closed-toe shoes, remove or securely fasten loose clothing, remove jewelry, and ensure long hair is securely tied back.
