CST3110C1 — Construction Careers Academy
This program is ideal for those interested in pursuing a career in carpentry, construction, electrical, heavy equipment, HVAC, welding, or other construction and maintenance jobs. Students will learn about basic safety, construction drawings, hand and power tools, material handling, and more. In addition to classroom learning, students will get paid to gain hands-on experience through work-based learning with local construction business(es). The course will cover site hazards, lifesaving equipment, and health hazards in construction, and how to reference OSHA Construction Standards resources. OSHA elective topics may include excavations, scaffolds, tools, PIVs, steel erection, concrete and masonry construction, confined space entry, and more. This course is a precursor/supplement to students preparing to earn a National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Level 1 craft credential. Job readiness and employability skills are essential for implementing positive organizational change. Students will be introduced to the soft skills needed for employment in construction trades. Topics include career awareness, work ethics, collaboration, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills. Successful students will earn an OSHA-10 Construction credential, recognized throughout the trade. Students will also gain skills comparable to the NCCER Core Curriculum which is required to receive any National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Level 1 craft credential. This course complements other trades-related Continuing Education courses.
