ENG 297 — African American Literature
Prerequisite: A grade of “C” or higher in ENG 102 or equivalent This course is a study of literature produced by representative African Americans from the eighteenth century to the p resent. The course emphasizes the diversity of themes and techniques found in these works and examines the historical, cultural, literary, and philosophical forces that shaped these works and that are reflected in them. Students will demonstrate the ability to interpret the literature and to relate the works to their historical and literary contexts. Reading skills will center on processes for literal and critical comprehension, as well as the development of vocabulary skills . Writing skills will focus on using an effective writing process including generating ideas, drafting, organizing, revising and editing to produce competent essays using standard written English.
