5 CR This course is an introduction to the central themes and aesthetics of the modern and contemporary periods in black American literature. Authors and works vary but would typically include Maya Angelou, Ralph Ellison, Gwendolyn Brooks, James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, Malcolm X, Charles Johnson, Octavia Butler and Nikki Giovanni.
