Subtotal 54.0 Total Hours Required 216.0 Certificate of Competency, High Intermediate English as a Second Language (ESL) This Certificate of Competency focuses on refining fundamental language and communication skills in English. Program emphasis is on independent reading, strengthening reading comprehension, analysis of main ideas and significant details, response to facts and opinions, vocabulary enrichment, writing process, paragraph development and organization, purpose, audience, and sentence types. Students also continue to build fluency in small and whole group discussions, give short informal and formal speeches, begin note taking, and refine listening comprehension This program takes a content-based approach to instruction, connecting skills to cultural context, focusing on topics of health and/or learning to earn and planning for success in present and future goals.
